"What was that one song on that one show you did?" or "Where were you when you did that thing on that show?"

Yep, they're common questions. Below are details and some inside stories on past episodes of The Carolina Tailgate Party.

Episode 1: The Carolina Tailgate Party
                                             Charlotte, NC
Originally Aired: 5/19/2004

Featured artist: The Caribbean Cowboys

Working title: "T'was the night before the Buffett concert, and all thru the town, all the Parrotheads were stirring... hey, what rhymes with town?"

In their own words: There aren't many good things that start with the words, "I got an idea. Here, hold my beer and watch this."

Famous off-air quote:
So, think they'll really air this?

Episode 2: Center City after 5
Charlotte, NC
Originally Aired: 6/2/2004

Featured artists: The Coconut Groove Band, Rodger Harrison

Working Title: "Parrotstock Promo Show"

In their own words: An amazing coincidence: a great band playing at an outdoor festival downtown, a need to promote an upcoming event -- sounds like good content for show #2

Famous off-air quote:

Those frogs in the background have got some rhythm!

Episode 3: The Filler Show
                                            Studio A
Originally Aired: 6/28/2004

Featured artists: The Caribbean Cowboys, Coconut Groove Band, Chris Bellamy

Working Title: "Oh hell, the Parrotstock shows won't be out for over a month, turn on the recorder and let's see what happens"

In their own words: That title pretty much sums it up. This was a rare in-studio appearance by the Tailgate.

Famous off-air quote:

They can't all be winners...

Episode 4: Live at Parrotstock 2004
Myrtle Beach, SC
Originally aired: 7/19/2004

Featured artists: The Chris Clifton Band, Hurricane Alley, Rodger Harrison, The Caribbean Cowboys, Erik Smith, Buzz Cason

Working Title: "Parrotstock 1"

In their own words: The first of 2 shows from Parrotstock 2004 in Myrtle Beach. So many bands, so many days, what should go in the first hour?

Famous off-air quote:

The F#@$king bird won't let go of my beer!

Episode 5: Still Alive at Parrotstock
                                                  Myrtle Beach, SC
Originally Aired: 7/26/2004

Featured artists: Rodger Harrison, Hurricane Alley, Erik Smith The Caribbean Cowboys, Buzz Cason, Hugo Duarte

Working Title: Parrotstock II

In their own words: The 2nd part of all the music we picked up at Parrotstock.

Famous off-air quote:

Yeah, that's much better than us on the cover

Episode 6: MargaRaleighvillE
Raleigh, NC
Originally Aired: 8/16/2004

Featured artists: Latitude, Matt Hall, The Caribbean Cowboys (stalkers)

Working Title: "If it wasn't for the recording, I wouldn't remember a thing."

In their own words: Our vote for the folks that had the most fun so far this year. Great party. It definitely stands out as one of the more interesting gigs we did this summer. Part of the story made the show (click here to listen with RealPlayer, or here for Windows Media Player ). There's a reason there are no pictures from this one...

Famous off-air quote:

Bear Trap!

Episode 7: Throw Back Shell Beach Party
Murrell's Inlet, SC
Originally Aired: 8/30/2004

Featured artists: Latitude, James "Sunny Jim" White

Working Title: "Atalaya"

In their own words: This was a fun show and ended up being pretty good on the air. It's the winner, however, for the number of technical difficulties in one weekend. We made up for it with an interesting camping trip, a 2am jaunt to the beach that's burned into our memories, and "campfire karaoke." This was also the first show with our new official photographer, "Cap't Tony" Novak. And suddenly, there are more pictures on the Web site.

Famous off-air quote:

Where'd that nice lady with the spiked fruit go?

Episode 8: Hurricane Party
Studio 2: The Night Bird
Originally Aired: 9/13/2004 (yes, during Hurricane Ivan)

Featured Artists: All Previous

Working Title: "The gig was rained out, now what do we do?"

In their own words: Don't get me wrong, Hurricanes do some amazing damage to structures and people. What gets me is the difference in perception between someone who grew up with Hurricanes and someone from another part of the world. The latter tend to panic a whole lot faster. The first group knows, the way to deal with a storm coming in is secure all loose items, pour something good, and hold on for the ride...

Famous off-air quote:

Whaddya mean our show conjured up 4 hurricanes in 8 weeks?

Episode 9: Live at the Lake Wylie Jam
                                            Lake Wylie, NC/SC Border
Originally Aired: 10/4/2004

Featured artists: The Rum Punch Bandits, The Rockafellas, Dangerous Dan Anderson, Erik Smith, The Lake Wylie All-Star Band

Working Title: "Look ma! Hula Girls!"

In their own words: The inaugural Lake Wylie Jam event was an adventure in itself. The first event we actually had a hand in helping to plan, it was like playing for the home crowd. Being Tuff Bailey's birthday weekend, he also made a debut performance for a crowd that size at this event.

Famous off-air quote:

10-to-1 you fall off the front of this stage before me

Episode 10: Parrots of the Caribbean
Madison, Al
Originally Aired: 10/18/2004

Featured artists: Itations, Mambo Gris Gris, The Depends Racing Team

Working Title: "Babbalamma"

In their own words: We've come to find out, just when you think the wierdest stuff has happened and it just can't get more bizarre, something new comes up. The something new this time was the ride in the van. If only we had been recording for that!"

Famous off-air quote:

Mass manipulation is an art form

Episode 11: Multiples at Carolina Beach
                                                        Carolina Beach, NC
Originally Aired: 10/25/2004

Featured artists: The Paul Grimshaw Band, Latitude

Working Title: "Camp 'fold-out'"

In their own words: This show covered the annual Pleasure Island PHC Beach Sweep, but also would air the week of Halloween, which was also the week before Meeting of the Minds... Everyone loves multiples..

Famous off-air quote:

and there we were, knee-deep in Mayonnaise

Episode 12: The Golden Shot Glass 2004 Nominees Show
                                                             Studio A
Originally Aired: 11/8/2004

Featured artists: Matt Hall, The Caribbean Cowboys, Rodger Harrison, Latitude, Erik Smith

Working Title: Shotglass 1

In their own words: So, in a post-show, rum-induced haze this summer sometime, the guys came up with the idea to do an awards show. What would personify the Carolina Tailgate? A trophy with a statue on it? A plaque? A cup? No, not a cup, a shot glass...

Famous off-air quote:

How many inside jokes can we fit into one show?

Episode 13: Searching for Parrotheads at Meeting of the Minds 2004

Featured artists: Matt Hall, Stan "The Man", Jim Morris, Latitude, New York Pauly, Hugo Duarte

Working Title: MOTM 1

In their own words: Radio Margaritaville was broadcasting the big MOTM shows live, so what else was going on in Key West that week? We went in search of all the other parties.

Famous off-air quote:

Where's Tony?

Episode 14: Still Searching at Meeting of the Minds 2004
                                                             Key West, FL
Originally Aired: 12/6/2004

Featured artists: Jim Morris, Gary Seiler, Hugo Duarte, "Mattitude", Matt Hall

Working Title: MOTM 2

In their own words: We had too much stuff for 1 hour, so we put more on 2 weeks later. This one has our little tribute to Captain Tony Tarricino.

Famous off-air quote:

Captain Tony on the show, that rocks!

In their own words: Ok, so everyone needs some time off around the holidays. We took all our favorite moments (as well as moments sent in by e-mail by listeners) and put this show together.

Famous off-air quote:

When do we get to go on the road again?

Listen Now

Episode 17: Cover Tunes
                                                Charlotte, NC & Studio A
Originally Aired: 1/17/2005

Featured artists: Jimmy Buffett

Working Title: Covers

In their own words: We've played a lot of acts doing covers of Jimmy Buffett songs. This show is all about Jimmy covering other people's songs. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!

Famous off-air quote:

Where on earth did you find Little Egypt?

Episode 18: Tsunami Relief Send-off
                                                       Charlotte, NC
Originally Aired: 1/17/2005

Featured artists: Rum Punch Bandits

Working Title: Tsunami

In their own words: A 16 member rescue team, bound to Indonesia for Tsunami relief gathered in Charlotte to get everything ready before they left. The Carolina Tailgate Party sponsored them with help from Parrothead clubs and Tailgate listeners. This is the result of the party we threw for them. We particularly enjoyed "story time" with our own Captain of the Hula Girls, Beth.

Famous off-air quote:

Nothing happens til it happens

Episode 19: Mid-Winter Meltdown 05
                                                       Manassas, VA
Originally Aired: 2/14/2005

Featured artists: Matt Hall, The CalypsoNuts, Sunny Jim Band, Jim Hoehn, Scott Kirby, Jim Morris

Working Title: Frozen Solids

In their own words: Our first time to the Best Western in Manassas. Not the first trip to a Best Western and expectations were not high. When we got there, we were blown away by the party that ensued. Great music, Great fun, great people.

Famous off-air quote:

This is Virginia, we smoke outside here... what?

Episode 20: Mid-Winter Meltdown Part Deux

Originally Aired: 2/28/2005

Featured artists: Matt Hall, The CalypsoNuts, Sunny Jim Band, Jim Hoehn, Scott Kirby, Jim Morris

Working Title: Still Frozen

In their own words: So much good music, so manyu great recordings, so much RUM! There was no way this was all going to fit in one show, so we continued the party for another hour. By the way, we auctioned off a Carolina Tailgate T-shirt with signatures from everyone who performed that weekend (pictured left), that was fun, we should do that more often.

Famous off-air quote:

I need to hear music... If I don't get that damned Mailman song outta my head, I'm gonna hurt someone...

Episode 21: The Golden Shot Glass Award Show
                                                   Garden City Beach, SC
Originally Aired: 3/14/2005

Featured artists: Latitude

Working Title: Shotglass '04

In their own words: Congrats to our winners, Latitude! There was a great party at J. Michael's in Garden City Beach with folks that came in from all over the country to see Tom and Michelle from Latitude get thier award. 50 lucky people are getting CD copies of this show.

Episode 22: The Copan Phlocking
                                             Copan Ruinas, Honduras
Originally Aired: 4/11/2005

Featured artists: "Country Boy" Rodger Harrison & Ben Birney

Working Title: Honduras

In their own words: It was our first trip out of the country with the show. Actually, it was the first trip out of the country ever for Tuff Bailey. It was election weekend in Honduras, which meant no alcohol sales. After a brief moment of "well, that can't mean the two of us!", our new friends, the military police with the camos and 4 foot automatic weapons, politely told us that that indeed it did include us.

Outside of that adventure, words can't describe the experience, but we plan to try with the DVD coming soon.

Famous off-air quote:

After 5 beers, you can speak any language perfectly!

Working Title: Homecoming

In their own words: In the 25 days prior to this show, we had been in Manassas, Garden City Beach, and Honduras recording the 4 shows previous to this one. The show went great, the concert was great, but behind these scenes were two individuals that were in a serious need for some R&R time.

Famous off-air quote:

So, we get 4 weeks off after this, right? Like 4 WHOLE weeks... right? No really, I'm serious.

Episode 24: Studio C
                                               Matthews, NC
Originally Aired: 5/9/2005

Featured artists: Cindy Kay & Tony "Fingers" Berkstar

Working Title: SkinnyZ Opening

In their own words: A local friend of ours opens this bar; sounds like the beginning of a joke, huh? Recording in the studio gets old when there are no events, now we have a place to call home when we're not out and about. This one's got a little different vibe to it; feels a little more gulf coast than most.

Famous off-air quote:

Damn, that's a big bird...
